It was Friday night in Montpellier, and the girls and I went out for a stroll about town hoping to pop into a discotheque or grab a dessert and coffee on the main square, but instead we happened to find ourselves as part of a historic event. That's right. You guessed it. The Michael Jackson memorial celebration. I must say that we were not as upset as some of the other attendees (see photo) but we were given golden candles and were swept up in the moment. In fact, we soon were chanting "Michael, Michael, Michael!" along with the mob. We sang "We are the World" "Billie Jean" and "Thriller." The fun thing about singing with the French is that the words are pronounced like this: "beelee jeen eez nut my luv-air." We also showed off our mad dancing skills. No one was actually able to do a split and stupidly, no one had brought a white glove with them, so we attempted the moonwalk. It didn't go so well. (see video) Our first weekend out in France was certainly memorable and not at all what we expected!

  2. The video of you and Karoline "moon walking" shows, Shay, that you have not quite perfected your moon walk yet! Keep working at it when there are no candles around. Who is France's answer to Michael Jackson, Edith Piaf? Keep me apraised of the pop idols of France so I can maintain my continental knowledge of all things. I wore what you said today at the interviews for new teachers and my colleagues just thought I was my usual dapper self. Tomorrow I am shopping white linen, baby. I am not going to any Jackson memorials in these old rags!! Love, dad

  3. Oh Dad, there is no answer to MJ. He is one of a kind. No-certainly don't go in ratty clothes, and apparently you shouldn't smile when doing Thriller.

  4. The video is fab! How did Karoline learn to moonwalk? or even you for that matter? were you even alive? anyway, I think that a vigil for MJ in Montpellier is way more fun than one for J.M. in Paris.

    Bonjour Shay.
You look like Michael Jackson. Like, after all the surgeries and skin bleaching.
    Luv ya
