Very Bad Trip

The French have this odd tendency to rename American movies. One might think that this means translate the English title to French which would not be odd at all. Ah, but no! Instead, the French change the English title to another English title. Recently I saw in a store the movie "Music and Lyrics" with its France name "Le Comeback." Why not just translate music and lyrics?! Currently playing in theatres is "Hangover" only the French have renamed it "Very Bad Trip." What? Why? It wasn't a very bad trip; it was a hangover after a really funny trip. I guess this is one of those weird French things that no one will understand.

    Well I do not think the practice of the French in renaming movies to be either weird or unexplainable. How many times after going to a movie have I said to myself, "Well, I could have thought of a better name for THAT movie." and then did so! The French are simply thinking of better names of movies. For example, what does "Gone with the wind" mean? The movie is not even about bad weather! I think something like "The trouble with the South" or "Scarlet and Rhett visit Atlanta" are far more communacative titles. Don't you think? I love all those French renames! love, dad

    What about when the Americans renamed "À la recherche du temps perdu" twice. I mean, how does that work?
    P.S. I'm reading a recent translation of this novel. Since I last read The Count of Monte Cristo, I clearly love french authors. I just wanted you to know.
    P.P.S. The book is good, but it's no "Insoutenable légèreté de l'être." Though, technically, I think that was originally published in Czech.
