Today's first real day in Nice was full of activity. We went to school first off, took a placement test, had a little orientation meeting and then a quick tour of the city. The other new students seem very nice. We immediately liked the two German girls who are very sweet and funny. We are amazed by the guy from Sweden who speaks English like a Californian. We are most intrigued however by the Japanese man who carries a purse and has a hot pink phone and by the woman with the orange hair. Think Wilma Flinstone as an older Italian woman.
It just so happens to be that today is Nice's 150th anniversary of being a part of France. I'm going to take credit for planning the whole trip around this date. During the tour, we stopped at the beach to watch fighter planes do tricks and draw with blue, white, and red smoke. We also saw a girl with an awesome visor. See picture. While the planes were cool, the promenade was packed with spectators, begging the obvious question: Why are all these people not at work at 11:00 on a Monday??? Also during the tour I noticed a drain with lots of corks stuck in it. Ah the French. No work and all wine. Nicole said as we were walking around, "oh my god they drink so much wine here" noting that at 11:30 people were enjoying probably their second glass of the day. Tonight there were fireworks on the water. It was lots of fun to sit at the beach all day and then come back at night to see the fireworks show, but the wind off the water made it quite chilly! Still, a beautiful end to a beautiful day.

It is chilly here in New Orleans as well!! You need a light sweater to go out anywhere! People are passing out in the street from heat stroke. Has the oil reached the Mediterranean yet? The photo of the cityscape was quite a sight. And you always find the "event" of the day like the Michael Jackson tribute and now the 150th anniversary spectacular. Fabulous, Shay. Nice work!! Keep us posted!
